The data from the government hospitals in Chennai have confirmed that though the Coronavirus cases have come down now there is an increase in the number of pneumonia cases now.
It must be noted that in the year 2020, the government hospitals in Chennai reported 5000 pneumonia cases. Now, in 2021, a similar trend is seen at the government hospitals in Chennai.
It is important to mention here that pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lung and small air sacs called alveoli get affected. Persons with pneumonia would show symptoms like dry cough, chest pain, fever, breathing difficulties etc.
According to Dr. Lavanya, consultant of General Medicine, SMCH Chennai there has been a surge in the pneumonia cases in the last 3 weeks mostly the paediatric pneumonia cases. She added that in most of the cases the patients had symptoms like diarrhoea and fever. She threw light on the adult pneumonia cases that have been getting reported. Truth is that 60% of those affected with pneumonia are below the age of 12. In the last one month, KMCH in Chennai has reported as many as 270 pneumonia cases. It is learnt that there is now an increasing trend of pneumonia cases at KMCH. This was as per the hospital authorities.
