About 29% of the people only have received their second dose of vaccination. There are now huge crowds at various shops due to the deepavali festival. These might result in the third Covid-219 infection wave in Chennai and in Tamil Nadu.
The medical experts have revealed that if the Tamil Nadu government fails to identify the Covid-19 clusters early and doesnt speed up the vaccination then there are chances of a third infection wave in Tamil Nadu.
As per Dr. Prabhdeep Kaur, deputy director, NIE, ICMR no one could say whether the third wave would be there or not and it would depend on factors like major change in the virus, failure to identify and contain the clusters early and public not following Covid norms etc. She then threw light on how just 29% of people have got their second vaccination dose and how people throng various shops for deepavali season without following Covid norms. It is learnt that there is threat of new SARS- CoV-2 variant namely AY.4.2.
Dr. T. Jacob John, famous virologist was of the view that unless there is a more infectious variant than delta virus and it escapes the immunity there would be no threat of a third infection wave. He hinted about how the latest variant AY.4.2 is being watched closely and how few cases have been reported in India. He mentioned that there might not be possibilities of the new variant causing an epidemic.
Former Director of Public Health, Dr. K. Kolandswamy shared his thoughts regarding the third infection wave. He pointed out that the chances of a third wave are less as the majority of the population has been vaccinated. He then spoke about how those above 60 years of age must be vaccinated compulsorily to avoid deaths due to a third wave.
Information is that in countries like China with a huge population majority have been vaccinated and others like Russia have been reporting a high number of fresh cases. The vaccination coverage must be speeded up in Tamil Nadu. Truth is that despite many getting vaccinated daily in TN the vaccination have been moving at a slow pace only.
