After much delay, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated the formation of Child Protection Committees across all 15 zones and 200 wards, aiming for completion by the end of March.

GCC Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran confirmed that the process is underway, with committee heads and members already listed. These committees will focus on safeguarding children, particularly in vulnerable communities, by monitoring safety concerns and reporting incidents promptly.

Each ward-level committee will include councillors, urban health nurses, child welfare officers, PTA/SMC representatives, NGOs, school principals, and Anganwadi workers. Special invitees will include members from disabled communities, the labour department, and residential welfare associations.

This initiative aligns with growing concerns over child safety, ensuring better protection and support for children across Chennai.
