With plans underway for a second airport in Parandur, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is considering setting up a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) to ensure faster connectivity to the new airport.
CMRL is studying two possible corridors for the RRTS:
🔹 Chennai Airport – Parandur via Sriperumbudur
🔹 Chennai – Kancheepuram – Vellore via Parandur
Unlike metro rail, which has stations every 1-2 km, the RRTS stations will be spaced 10 km apart. The semi-high-speed trains will operate at speeds of 100-120 kmph, significantly improving travel time.
The State Budget 2025 has also proposed feasibility studies for three major RRTS corridors:
✔️ Chennai – Chengalpattu – Tindivanam – Villupuram
✔️ Chennai – Kancheepuram – Vellore
✔️ Coimbatore – Tiruppur – Erode – Salem
Additionally, CMRL is exploring metro connectivity between Chennai Airport and Sriperumbudur, with an RRTS extending beyond Sriperumbudur to Parandur. The feasibility study is expected to begin soon.
