Chennai Corporation Takes Steps to Prevent Rain-Induced Flooding

In a significant move to combat rain-induced flooding, the Velachery Veerangal Stream and the Virugambakkam Canal in Chennai have been transferred from the Water Resources Department to the Corporation for renovation and better management.

The Virugambakkam Canal, spanning 6.5 km, currently handles only 800 cubic feet of water, far below its capacity of 1700 cubic feet. To address this issue, 12 narrow bridges along the canal will be demolished and rebuilt with raised designs to improve water flow. This measure is expected to prevent the frequent flooding of the Vadapalani 100-foot road during heavy rains.

In Velachery, the Veerangal Stream will undergo modifications, including raising the side walls along a 2.78 km stretch. This enhancement will allow a 25% increase in water flow, reducing waterlogging in low-lying areas.

The Corporation has set February 2025 as the target for completing these critical projects. According to the Deputy Commissioner (Works), these initiatives aim to protect approximately 25 lakh residents from the adverse effects of rain and flooding. The measures mark a significant step towards improving Chennai’s resilience to monsoon challenges.
