The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to demolish and reconstruct the compound walls of several waterbodies, including Captain Cotton Canal, Kodungaiyur Canal, and Veerangal Odai in Alandur (Zone 12). The initiative aims to restore dilapidated structures and prevent waste dumping by increasing the height of the walls. A budget of ₹3.78 crore has been allocated for this phase.

Additionally, restoration work will be carried out at SIDCO Canal, Veerangal Odai (Velachery 100 Feet Road), Captain Cotton Canal, and Mambalam Canal, with a total allocation of ₹23.59 crore under the 2024-25 budget. These improvements will enhance water flow and reduce inundation risks.

Further, ₹8.82 crore has been set aside for wall-raising and chain link fencing at Veerangal Odai, where box culvert bridges will also be demolished and reconstructed.
