Chennai Metro Phase II: Delays at Two Key Stations in Poonamallee-Porur Stretch

The Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) Phase II project, which aims to open its first stretch by December 2025, is facing challenges due to delays in the construction of Karayanchavadi and Kumananchavadi stations along the Poonamallee–Porur corridor.

The ₹63,246 crore project includes a 9 km stretch with 10 stations, most of which are progressing well. However, the Karayanchavadi and Kumananchavadi stations have encountered setbacks primarily due to the Kattupakkam grade separator, which was not part of the original plan. Adjustments to the viaduct design to accommodate this structure caused delays.

Officials stated that construction at these two stations is complex due to their height of nearly 25 meters, built above the grade separator. Heavy traffic and space constraints have made progress difficult. Despite this, CMRL has increased manpower and closely monitors the work to ensure completion on time. The viaduct construction is almost complete, and station work is being expedited.
