The procedure of the security tags for hand baggage is being withdrawn from 1st June in 6 domestic airports including the Chennai airport.

It is a standard routine to conduct security checks on the belongings of the flight passengers in all airports. Heavier baggage is allowed only through cargo. The hand baggage etc. is checked and security clearance tags is given.

There are instances where the flight passengers forget to get their hand baggage security tags, they are called from the plane to obtain the same. This leads to avoidable time wastage and sometimes even leads to disputes between the security personnel and the flight passengers.

In this situation, there was a meeting between the Central Security senior personnel and the senior airport administrators.

Following this, the decision was taken by the central government only to check the hand baggage as the latest hi-tech security/surveillance monitoring systems are installed in all the airports ad there was no necessity for the security tags on the hand baggage.

Accordingly, the system of security tags on hand baggage is withdrawn on a trial basis from 1st June in the domestic airports of Chennai, Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Patna, Guwahati, and Jaipur.

As the trial was successful in all the 6 airports, the system of doing away with the hand baggage security seal is now implemented throughout.

In the next phase, this will be implemented in the airports in Pune, Bhubaneshwar, Visakhapatnam, and Goa.

The central government has planned to implement this in 59 airports throughout India.
