Southern Railway (SR) has shortlisted three key routes for the introduction of the city’s first Vande Metro train, according to Kaushal Kishore, Additional General Manager of Southern Railway.
Speaking at a post-budget press meet on Monday, he revealed that Chennai-Gudur, Chennai-Villupuram, and Chennai-Jolarpet have been identified as high-demand corridors suitable for operating the Vande Metro service.
When asked about the most viable route, Kishore stated that feasibility studies are currently underway, and a final decision will be made upon the arrival of the rakes.
The Vande Metro is a fully air-conditioned 12-car train, designed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) for efficient short-distance travel between nearby cities. A successful trial run was conducted between Chennai and Walajah Road in August 2024.
