With increased arrival, prices of vegetable down in Koyambedu market

With the slight increase in the quantity of the vegetables arriving at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market, the prices of some vegetables including brinjal, broad beans, Lady’s finger, and spinach have come down.
With many auspicious wedding days in the last few weeks and the occasion of the reopening of schools, the prices of the vegetables in the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market had gone up.
The situation has now changed with the arrival of more vegetables in quantity.
Broad beans, which was sold at Rs. 45 per kg last week, was sold at Rs. 25 per kg. Lady’s finger, which was sold at Rs. 35, was sold at Rs. 25 per kg. Spinach, sold at Rs. 25 per kg, was sold at Rs. 15 per kg. Bitter gourd price also came down from Rs. 35 per kg to Rs. 30 per kg.
Carrot price came down from Rs. 60 per kg to Rs. 55 per kg. Drumstick price came down from Rs. 40 per kg to Rs. 35 per kg. More importantly, tomato, which was sold at Rs. 60 per kg, was sold at Rs. 45 per kg.
In this regard, the President of the Koyambedu fruit, flower, and vegetable traders’ association, Mr P. Sukumar explained that there have been summer rains in several places in Tamil Nadu in the recent period. With this, the quantity of vegetables transported has also increased. So, the prices of vegetables have come down.
Along with the above, the number of auspicious days for the wedding have come down and this has led to a decrease in vegetable prices.
Tamil Nadu depends on the states of Andhra and Karnataka to meet the demand for tomato. However, the Northern states have also started procuring tomato from Andhra and Karnataka. Thus, the quantity of tomato transported to Tamil Nadu has come down – leading to the increase in the price of tomatoes.
