From now on those rail passengers who want to go to Madurai, Bodinayakkanur, Karur and Tirunelveli etc need not go to Koyambedu bus stand to board buses. The news that has come out now is SETC or State Express Transport Corporation has started the operation of three air-conditioned bus services to the above mentioned places in Tamil Nadu from Egmore railway station. People who do not have a confirmed train ticket need not travel all the way to Koyambedu as they could board the buses from Chennai Egmore railway station itself. The main purpose was to tap the growing transportation demand that cannot be catered by trains.
A senior official belonging to SETC expressed his views and spoke about how from Monday AC sleeper cum eater service to Karur and AC sleeper bus to Bodinayakkanur was operated from Egmore railway station on trial basis. He then spoke about how many commuters used these buses and how Chennai–Tirunelveli AC sleeper bus that was launched from Monday would also start from Chennai Egmore railway station. In the past these AC sleeper buses were operated from Koyambedu is known. It is worthy to note that many rail passengers who could not get their train tickets confirmed faced issues as they have to travel all the way to Koyambedu CMBT to board SETC and omni buses to the above mentioned places in TN. This move is now spoken highly.
It must be noted that the trains operated from Chennai Egmore to places like Madurai, Tirunelveli, Sengottai, KanyaKumari, Virudhunagar had more than 98 percent occupancy. In the express trains the sleeper berths have huge demand among the rail travellers is known. Better connectivity for Theni plus Karur districts could be got by this now. From Chennai to Bodinayakkanur there are no direct trains available now but from Chennai to Karur there are 2 daily express trains like Palakkad Express and Chennai Egmore- Mangaluru Express.
The Chennai- Tirunelveli section is one of the highly congested routes in India and there are as many as 7 daily express trains during the night. Timings for AC sleepers would be fixed only after studying the patronage of buses and this was confirmed by the officials. Between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm, three buses leave Chennai Egmore railway station now. An official from SETC spoke about how staff members were deployed to guide the passengers to board AC sleeper buses. The buses from Egmore station would pass through Koyambedu also.
