By 2024, Chennais 4th desalination plant to start functioning

The superb piece of news that has come out now is by the year 2024 that is around 5 years from now the city of Chennai’s 4th desalination plant is expected to start functioning. The information collected is by this 4th desalination plant the supply from the four facilities would be 750 mld and that would make sure that there would be no water crisis in Chennai.

Point to be noted is in the year 2010 the first desalination plant began functioning in Minjur in Chennai and it supplies 100 mld water to Manali, Ennore, Madhavaram, Kathiavakkam, Thiruvottriyur, Tondiarpet and Vysarpadi. In the year 2013, second desalination plant started functioning at Nemmeli on ECR with 90 mld capacity and it supplies water to Sholinganallur, Neelankarai, Injambakkam, Karapakkam, Thoraipakkam and Perungudi etc.

The information is the fourth desalination plant would be Chennai city’s largest with 400 mld capacity and it would come up at Perur on ECR near the existing desalination plant at Nemmeli by 2024. This was confirmed by a senior official belonging to the metro water department. A management consultant for this project has been appointed by the agency and the tender process would be completed by the month of November 2019.

By the month of October in 2020, the work order for the successful bidder would be issued and within the next 3 and half years of time the project would be completed. This was as per an official of the metro water department. Sensational piece of news is once the desalination plant project at Perur gets completed then it would supply water to 23 lakh people belonging to the Chennai. People living in the south-western part of Chennai would be highly benefited by this Perur desalination plant. The official concluded that the present water crisis in the Chennai city would not be there after 5 years.

In some areas of north and south Chennai with a population of 19 lakhs, the 2 desalination plants facilities has capacities for treating 100 mld each supplies water is known. Chief Minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswamy grabbed many eyeballs when he laid the foundation for Thursday, 27th June 2019, for the 3rd desalination plant. This upcoming plant would be set up next to the present plant at Nemmeli.

By this third desalination plant, 150 mld of sea water could be treated and water could be provided to the 9 lakh residents in places like velachery, Alandur, St Thomas Mount, Medavakkam, Kovilambakkam, Nanmangalam, Kilkattalai, Moovarasanpettai, Sholinganallur, Ullagaram, Puzhudhivakkam, Madipakkam. Water would also be supplied to the IT companies located along the OMR.  It is important to note that by the process of desalination mineral components present in the saline water are removed and the resulting water could be consumed by the humans.
