From Chennai Central it would take just hour to reach Avadi that has got population of 4.29 lakh.  This place is now making news because of open sewage, lack of piped water plus due to presence of lots of garbage and free straying cattle. It was on 17th of June Avadi was announced as the 15th corporation of TN. It is shocking to mention that Avadi Corporation does not have basic civic amenities and infrastructure also.

Point is the lack of political will plus slackness on officials has made this Avadi uninhabitable. The residents of this place have not got piped water supply and just 624 out of 82,000 households have piped drinking water supply.  It must be taken into account that the Rs 105 crores project included laying of pipelines from Puzhal Eri, constructing overhead tanks and joining all the households to the network. The residents of Avadi use bore wells for their drinking water needs now.

It was later pointed out by an official belonging to Avadi Corporation that there was no single water source available and Puzhal Eri was dry. He explained about the need to find an alternative source and said unless a new source was found it would not be possible to provide water connections.

It is worthy to note that in Avadi there is no underground drainage and open sewages are creating many issues for the public. In the year 2009, corporation began the underground sewage project at a cost of Rs 158 crores is known. This project has not been completed even now and most residents let out dump sewage and wastes on the open lands here.

It was later mentioned by the corporation engineer Mr. K. Vaithiyalingam that the underground sewage project would take better shape in another 3 months of time after a 36 mld sewage treatment plant in Paruthipet is commissioned.

A resident belonging to Vasantham Nagar in Avadi-Ponamallee Road spoke about how the open drainage canals running along his house are breeding ground for many diseases. He hinted about the total lack of planning and coordination between the various departments. It is important to note that in the 2015 floods canals were widened and covers opened to allow free flow of rain water.

Information collected is sewage from whole Avadi area flows through the canals into Cooum. He expressed his unhappiness regarding how every official was approached to resolve the issue and how no solution was found till now. Lack of regulation has resulted in total chaos and this was as per the residents of Avadi. It is now revealed that people are setting up septic tanks on roads and encroaching roads but no action has been taken on them.
