Since the year 2005, 2 hectares of encroached land on the South Canal Bank road in Adyar has been struck in litigation. It is now said that GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation would reclaim this encroached land. Notice has been issued by the zonal officials to the Brothers of St Patrick at Gandhi Nagar in Adyar. It must be noted that the encroached land is now being used as children’s playground.

Information is as per the early suit this land was allotted to the school to use as playground. The civic body was unaware of the proceedings as the civic body was not impleaded in the case. Just about 2 years back, a land survey was carried out and in this survey the officials came to know about the issue and an appeal was filed by the school in the HC or High Court in Madras. Setting aside the earlier order, the HC had sought a fresh trial in the case on 15th July. High court mentioned that facts, evidences and arguments of the plaintiff were not discussed. It is important to note that as per HC it was a cryptic order and it can’t be a valid foundation for passing orders in favour of the school.

It was pointed out by an assistant engineer belonging to the corporation that they had all the land documents including revenue records that showed that the land belonged to them. He was positive about getting back the land that has been used as playground. He added that on 31st July 2019, an order has been issued to the school.

It must be taken into account that no building would be destroyed. He hinted that compound wall would only be demolished and revealed that land was just an open ground. Point to be noted is 7 days have been given now for the school and after that reclaiming of land would be carried out by the GCC.

It was mentioned by a resident that group of people who wanted to manage solid waste in the locality had approached the corporation to allot lands for composting organic wastes. She then explained about how at that time the official took them to this land for sake of inspection and how it was found that the land was used not only by the school but also by local contractors.

Information is the contractors have parked the earth movers and stored construction materials in this land. The resident then revealed how the officials have informed that they would look into the issues. They have been told by the officials that the legal battle has been won and they could use the land to set up a sewage treatment plant and compost yard.
