Following the TN state governments requests, the Southern Railways r SR would be operating suburban trains in Chennai from 5th October onwards. Important information is that these suburban trains would be only for the essential services staff and they would have to show travel permission letters issued by the nodal officer of the government.
There would be a limited number of trains to be operated by the Chennai division on all routes and this includes Chennai Central- Avadi/Tiruvallur/Arakkonam, Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu/ Tambaram and Chennai Beach-Velachery.
On Friday, the SR said in its release that only staff members of essential services authorised by the government would be permitted to travel in the suburban trains. The release further stated that the workers would have to produce travel permission letters issued by the government’s nodal officers
Information about the name, designation, department/office of the employees, names of the originating and designating stations etc would be there in the permission letters. Daily tickets or season tickets would be issued to these commuters only when they produce the permission letters in original form plus their photo ID cards issued by the government departments.
Two layers of checking have been put by the SR for the sake of preventing unauthorised persons from entering the trains. At the entry points in the stations, the RPF/government railway police personnel would check the identity proofs of the commuters and near the platforms the ticket checking staff members would check the train/season tickets plus identity proofs.
For preventing Covid-19 from spreading, SR would take many steps. These would be sanitising of rakes, thermal screening of the commuters etc. While travelling on the trains and at the stations, the commuters must wear facemasks and maintain physical distancing. Truth is that at present 30 special trains are being operated on the suburban routes. This was as per a special officer of SR.
