It has been more than 6 months since the hotels and restaurants were opened in Chennai city.

It is now said that most of these restaurants and hotels are struggling to stay afloat now. There are various reasons that have been creating issues to these restaurants and hotels and these are increase in raw material prices, inability to pay loans, plus very few international tourists.

It was pointed out by Mr. Ravi, president of Chennai Hotels Association that more than 1500 hotels have been closed down since the lockdown and many would follow. None of the big hotels are occupied now due to the lack of foreign tourists and due to this the prices have been reduced by 50percent.  It is learnt that the loans facilitated by the government involve heavy interest. It is true that during the lockdown the restaurants and hotels were not allowed to function but rent, loans and taxes were paid. Mr. Sreenivasan, another member, spoke about how the government must exempt the restaurants from paying loans etc or provide some compensation for survival.

The residents of Chennai have got used to ordering food from their homes and they have stopped coming to the hotels now. In the absence or lack of din-ins, the restaurants remain empty most of the time even on the weekends.

Cloud kitchens are thriving well now and this was according to a restaurant owner from T. Nagar. He hinted that most people who come are on short vacations and on the weekends the occupancy increases little.
