The finance minister Mr. Palanivel Thiyaga Rajan mentioned that the services on the Kodambakkam to Poonamallee bypass section of the Chennai Metro Phase -2 project would be ready by the middle of 2025. Point is that the 16km Kodambakkam Power House- Poonamallee by-pass elevated stretch is a part of the 26.1km Corridor 4- Light House to Poonamallee bypass.
A total distance of 118.9km is covered by corridors of phase-2 including Madhavaram to SIPCOT and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. The minister assured that the entire metro rail phase-2 project would be completed by the month of December in the year 2026. It is learnt that parallel to this TN government would take up extension of Metro rail project from Airport to Kilambakkam bus terminus via Tambaram.
As already committed in the budget speech of the Union Finance Minister, The TN government would persuade the Union government to provide early formal approval for equity participation in phase-2 of the Chennai Metro Rail project. In addition to this, the TN government would also persuade the Union government for the necessary counterpart funding released at the earliest. It was later hinted by the finance minister that establishment of metro rail would be taken up in Coimbatore.
