There was a dip in the polling yesterday in Chennai when compared to the 2011 urban local body elections. This has caught the attention of many now. Around 51percemnt of the voters participated in voting in the 2011 elections. It must be taken into note that the extended zones have higher turnouts in both 2011 as well as in 2022.
Core Chennai zones such as Anna Nagar, Kodambakkam and Adyar etc had poor voter turnout this time. These 3 zones have many affluent and upper class families are well known.
While average polling 41.12% was recorded in the core zones belonging to Chennai city, the added zones recorded average polling of 49.68 percent. This has taken many by surprise now. In the 3 of the 8 extended zones belonging to GCC such as Tiruvottriyur, Manali and Madhavaram etc, polling percentage was more than 50% and this was mentioned by the data. Just 38% polling was recorded in core Chennai zones like Adyar, Anna Nagar and Teynampet etc. These zones are densely populated are well known to us. Voting percentage of 40% was recorded in the Kodambakkam zone and
The important piece of information is that in the Chennai city overall just 43.65% voters came out to vote. In the year 2011 in the urban local body elections, many Chennai residents showed interest to come out and vote. Around 51% of the voters cast their votes in the 2011 elections. Residents belonging to the extended zones in Chennai showed much enthusiasm in voting yesterday.
It was mentioned by Mr. V.S. Jayaraman T. Nagar’s Welfare Association in the Kodambakkam zone that the polling was low yesterday due to the previous experiences with the councillors. He added that the residents lost their confidence in the councillors and this was the reason behind low turnout for voting. It is learnt that those who did not want to cast their vote simply stayed at their homes.
According to Mr. G. Vasudevan of Kottivakkam based AGS Colony Residents Welfare Association, adopting technology for voting would have been successful. By this, those persons who are away from their hometown would also be able to vote through the online process.
