It was in the month of April in 2021, the initiative for cleaning the Korattur Lake in Chennai first began. At that point of time, Coronavirus infection was spreading like fire and due to this reason the cleaning works of this lake were halted. For a few weeks on the Sundays, the work resumed once again but was stopped in January 2022 when the Coronavirus third wave struck and lockdown was announced.
On Sunday, 20th February 2022, the volunteers and green activists were busy cleaning this lake. They explained that the waste collected from the Korattur Lake remained the same 10 to 15 tonnes even after 29 weeks since this Sunday drive first began. Setting up of a sewage treatment plant was suggested by them so that the water can be purified and used for better purposes.
Mr. Sekar, Korattur Lake Pathukappu Makkal Iyakkam spoke about how earlier draining of water bodies was carried out and how during the rains the sewage water gets mixed. This was the reason why the lake was not cleaned. He hinted that installation of sewage treatment plants would then the water could be used for various purposes. Every Sunday nearly 40 members including children and senior citizens join together to clean Korattur Lake. At Least 10 to 15 tonnes of waste gets collected by them. Many awareness programmes have been conducted here despite those programmes the locals litter the lake. Another volunteer spoke about how the volunteers hoped to collect less waste from the lake.
