Across the Chennai city, storm water drains or SWD projects have been going on now. It is now said that these SWD works would be completed by the month of September 2022. This was according to Mr. K.N. Nehru, minister for municipal administration and water supply.
Information gathered is that 32% of the SWD works undertaken in Chennai in places like Seethammal Colony, Bazullah Road, Rajamannar Salai, Ajeez Nagar, G.S.T Road and Ripon building have been completed by the GCC. It is noteworthy that SWD works in these places have been undertaken under the Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative.
In localities like Pulianthope, Adyar, Broadway and Ambedkar Salai etc, 12percent of 20km drain work consisting of Rs 73 crores have been completed. The minister later spoke about how 145 and 40% of the work taken up under the flood mitigation fund and infrastructure and amenities fund have been completed also. He added that 28% of the work has been completed at the Kosasthalaiyar river basin and a week back work orders were issued for the Kovalam river basin also.
Delay in the completion of the work has been mainly because of the fact that a single contractor has been given all the works. The point is that there are only a few eligible contractors available and the issue is being addressed. In each zone in Chennai, an engineer and an IAS officer has been appointed to take care of the work. There would be a review once every 3 days as to how much work would get completed per day has been calculated already. Suggestions regarding work have been given by the Thirupugazh Committee.
It is worthy to note that rainwater harvesting structures are also constructed and the existing ones are being de-silted. The minister concluded that a total of 834 trees have been identified and 500 tree branches have been trimmed till now.
