Senior citizens latest demand in Chennai has caught the attention?

The news is that some senior citizens in Chennai have requested MTC to provide them with more free coupons for their travel. This free coupon scheme in MTC buses in Chennai was launched in 2016 is known to us. As per this, the senior persons would be able to travel in the MTC buses ( not in the A/c buses) free of cost.
The senior persons must submit their applications and age proof details etc to the nearest bus depots. They would be issued 10 free tokens. According to Mr. VS. Jayaraman, of T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, with the 10 free coupons per month just 5 return trips would only be possible and that was not enough.
The state transport dept has made a study and as per the study it was clear that 70percent of senior citizens who frequently travel for work and other reasons etc are dependent on public modes of transport like MTC buses etc. Bitter fact is that in 2022 the cost of travel in private transport like autos, cars etc increased many times. The cost incurred towards this unique scheme would be reimbursed by the TN govt and MTC need not have to worry about the revenue losses etc.
The official data have confirmed that every year the TN govt sanctions Rs 50 crores for this scheme to help many senior citizens in the Chennai city. It is now said that the MTC will be opening counters for the renewal and distribution of tokens for 6 months.
