As many as eighteen major stretches in Chennai will be transformed into litter free corridors. This was according to GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation. On 21st of December 2022, GCC would be undertaking a massive drive to remove all sorts of waste from their roads in the city. Sound`s sensational right!!

The sensational programme would cover the road length of 74.2km in Chennai. Information gathered is that cleaning work would be undertaken in the road stretches like Manali based Kamarajar Salai, Poonamallee High Road, Cathedral Road, Thiyagaraja Road, Elliots Beach Road, OMR and GST Road. As many as 442 medium sized bins would be kept in these roads for the public to throw the waste.

Separate compartments would be there for biodegradable and for non-bio degradable waste. For this, about 300 conservancy staff would be used.

As per Mr. N. Mahesan, chief engineer of solid waste management dept of GCC, these roads would have a mobile conservancy staff stationed there. Public dumping waste on the roads would be closely monitored by the team workers. These staff would play an important role in ensuring that the roads have been kept clean and bins get cleared on time.

The chief engineer spoke about how this is just the first phase and in the future cleaning works would be done in other major roads in the city. He hinted that do not litter sign boards would be placed plus a penalty amount for violations would be collected. Soon, GCC would form an enforcement squad with a conservancy inspector, conservancy supervisor and assistant executive engineer for levying the fines.

It was mentioned by a Velachery resident that the idea was superb and it must not be restricted to just the civic body alone. She added that the litter free corridors must turn into people movement. By that, the individuals would be taking care of their streets.
