The long delay has now come to an end!!

Coastal regulation zone or CRZ clearance has been given by the expert appraisal committee of the union government for the Chennai Port- Maduravoyal elevated double decker corridor.

The bidding process for this superb project has already been started by the NHAI or National Highways Authority of India. There has been a delay in this project for more than a decade. Just a few weeks back, SCZMA or State Coastal  Zone Management authority gave green sigal for this project and then clearance from the central committee was obtained.

It is learnt that the committee has directed the Chennai Port Trust to ensure the flow of natural tidal water to mangroves and take adequate steps for the uninterrupted flow of tidal water. Not only that, the committee has also directed the  Chennai Port Trust to adhere to the conditions that have been laid down by SCZMA.

It must be noted that one instruction that was issued by SCZMA to Chennai port trust was to ensure the free flow of water in the Cooum river during and after the construction of elevated expressway.

The construction materials are not allowed to be shared in the CEZ areas and instructions were given for this too. For the construction of piers and bridges, immediate removal of a temporary approach road was also instructed. The soil excavated from the construction of the piers etc must not be dumped in the river and this was also directed to the Chennai Port Trust by the committee.

As the design and cost of the project was revised in 2017, the port trust resubmitted the project for CRZ clearance. The project cost was Rs 3204 crores as per the earlier submission now costs Rs 5721.33 crores. Point is that the total length of the project is the same only and that is 20.565 km.
