Who would not feel happy seeing coconut trees present on both sides of the road?
Truth is that those persons who travel along the ECR road in Chennai in the future would witness coconut trees present on both sides of the road. Sound`s incredible right!!
The planting of coconut saplings along this road has started and NHAI or National Highways Authority of India would be planting 22500 saplings. This would be as a part of phase one of the road widening project.
According to an official from NHAI, coconut saplings would be planted along the ECR as they would have better chances of survival and would suit the landscape. He explained that the saplings that were chosen were tall and would be planted in 3 rows. It is learnt that the outermost row would have coconut palm trees and the row next to the road would have neem and punga native varieties etc. Information gathered is that about 600 saplings have been planted already and work has been going to plant the rest.
About 40000 saplings would be planted along the 31km stretch from Mahabalipuram to Mugaiyur in the first phase, The contractor who is involved in the road widening work would be planting about 225000 saplings. After receiving funds from NHAI, remaining saplings would be planted. For procuring and planting the saplings, NHAI has associated with the Forest dept now. It is true that now due to ongoing many road projects saplings are in huge demand. This was as per an officer from NHAI.
