Travelling in highly congested metro trains in Chennai might soon become a thing of the past!!
The latest news is that CMRL has begun the paperwork to get a loan of Rs 300 crores to procure 5 six car trains for the existing phase-1 and extension lines etc. This would make the passengers travel in less congested metro trains in Chennai. Many people these days travel in the metro trains is a well known fact.
It is now said that a tender has been floated to identify the lender for the sake of loan. It must be recalled that in August the TN govt approved CMRLs proposal to procure 28 rakes of 6 car trains for an estimated cost of Rs 2820.29 cr. This would be to meet the future demands of the passengers in phase-1 lines in 2028.
It was brought to light by the tender document that to cater to the increasing metro train ridership Rs 300 cr amount would be utilised to procure an additional 30 train cars for operations
Now the metro train average footfalls are 2.5lakh per day. There has been an increase in the metro train ridership from January 2022 onwards and this was according to the annual report of CMRL. For the 54.1km 2 corridor phase, CMRL has a fleet of 52 rakes of 4 car trains is known to us. For weekday peak hour operations, a total of 45 rakes including 2 rakes as operations reserve are utilized.
