Tomato Prices Skyrocket in Chennais Koyambedu Market Amid Supply Shortage
The price of tomatoes has surged drastically at Chennai’s Koyambedu wholesale market, with rates nearly doubling compared to last week. A kilogram of tomatoes, which was sold for Rs 35 last week, is now priced between Rs 65 and Rs 75 in the wholesale market. Retail prices have also spiked, with tomatoes reaching up to Rs 80 to Rs 90 per kilogram, a sharp rise from last week’s Rs 50.
Traders attribute the steep price hike to a significant drop in supply. Currently, only 60 to 75 lorries of tomatoes are arriving at the market daily, compared to the usual 100 to 110 lorries. This reduced supply has led to a sharp increase in prices.
Other vegetables have also seen fluctuations in prices:
- Onions: Rs 55 per kg
- Beans: Rs 110 per kg
- Shallots: Rs 70 per kg
- Carrots: Rs 40 per kg
- Coconuts: Rs 52 per kg
- Ginger: Rs 150 per kg
- Mango: Rs 100 per kg
Consumers are feeling the impact of these price hikes, with many hoping for improved supply to stabilize the market.
