The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a crackdown on vehicles abandoned on city roads for more than 15 days. The move aims to reduce road congestion and enhance pedestrian safety by clearing public spaces of unattended vehicles. Under the new policy, owners of abandoned vehicles will receive a notification on the 15th day, after which any unclaimed vehicles will be seized and put up for auction.

Since the beginning of this initiative in July, GCC has impounded a total of 1,774 vehicles, out of which 729 have been reclaimed by their owners. The remaining 1,045 vehicles are set to be auctioned off. However, the auction process faced delays due to ongoing flood mitigation efforts in the city.

The auctions will be managed through the Metal Scrap Trade Corporation`s e-auction platform, ensuring a streamlined and transparent process. Notifications about the auctions will be published in newspapers and shared on GCC`s official social media channels to inform potential bidders.

The initiative is expected to clear up much-needed space on Chennai`s roads and encourage timely vehicle removal by owners, contributing to better urban management and traffic flow.
