Chennai Metro Rail is gearing up for a significant milestone as Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is set to inaugurate the test run of the city`s first driverless train at the Poonamallee depot next week. The new train is part of the Phase II expansion, which spans 118.9 km. Built by Alstom, the three-car Unattended Train Operation (UTO) train was delivered to the Poonamallee depot on October 17 after initial testing at Sricity.

Following the inauguration, the train will undergo further tests and safety checks on the Phase II track, eventually serving priority Corridor 4, stretching from Light House to Poonamallee Bus Depot. The initial operations between Poonamallee and Porur Junction are expected to start by late 2025. Alstom has secured a contract to supply 36 more three-car driverless trains, supporting the future growth of Chennai’s expanding metro network.
