In Tamil Nadu, there are enough hospitals for the patients, but are there enough doctors in these hospitals?
The important issue now with the govt hospitals in TN is that these hospitals have shortage of doctors, nurses and other staff etc. As a result, the patients are suffering from not getting proper treatment at the right time.
Across the state of TN, there are 11000 government hospitals including govt medical college hospitals, district head hospitals, regional hospitals and PHCs etc. Every day, for treating lakhs of patients, just 20000 vacancies are only present in these hospitals. It is shocking to note that there is a shortage of about 4000 persons also in these hospitals in TN. Bitter fact is that the public is suffering from not getting proper treatment at the right time. The hospitals in TN are struck in a health crisis.
A review meeting was held recently and in the meeting health secretary Mr. Supriya Sahu asked the govt medical college hospitals to correct their issues like unsanitary toilets and sewage stagnation etc in the govt hospitals. He also gave instructions to the Directorate of Medical Education & Research to monitor basic facilities, sanitation and food quality in the government hospitals once a month and submit reports etc. This move has been appreciated by the government doctors.
At present, there are more than 2000 doctor posts vacant in the PHCs in TN. There should be about 850 gynaecologists but there are just a few doctors now. Point is that about 2000 deliveries take place every day and therefore posts for gynaecologists must be increased to 2000.
From the recent interview issued by the TN health minister Mr. M. Subramaniam, during the Coronavirus period about 1412 nurses were appointed on contract basis. Of those about 1271 were appointed to the vacant permanent nursing posts.
To fill up the vacant 2553 medical posts that are lying vacant, an online exam would be held on 27th January 2025 and 24000 doctors would appear for the exam. In the same way, 1066 health inspector posts and 2250 village head posts would also be filled up.
