On Tuesday, 25th February 2025, deputy chief minister Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin grabbed the attention of many when he opened the U turn flyover near the busy Tidel Park Junction on the OMR or Old Mahabalipuram Road or Rajiv Gandhi Salai in south Chennai.
It is now said that those vehicles heading towards Madhya Kailash and Taramani CSIR Road from Thiruvanmiyur would be able to use this new facility without the need to wait at the Tidel Park Junction.
About the new flyover:
It is learnt that this U turn flyover is 510m in length and 8.5m in width and it has got 3 arms. One arm would allow the vehicles to go off on CSIR Road Taramani.
It was in 2019 the administrative sanction was issued for this flyover work. In October 2020, an agreement was signed with the contractor. The work started in October itself.
On the OMR, this U-turn flyover is the second one with the first one located in Indira Nagar (460m in length and 8.50m in width). At a cost of Rs 20 cr, the facility was constructed and was inaugurated in November 2023.
The deputy chief minister also inaugurated a FOB or foot over bridge to help the pedestrians from West Avenue Road in Thiruvanmiyur to the MRTS station to cross the IT corridor as it has been connected to an already existing FOB. An amount of Rs 11.30 cr was used to construct the facility with escalators on both sides. Information collated is that the new structure is 155m in length and 5.25m in width.
