There is some good news for the international passengers at the Chennai airport!!
It is now said that the check-in process of international passengers flying out of Chennai airport will become easier and faster from next week. The AAI or Airport Authority of India has mentioned that it would open new check-in counters at the international terminal.
There are nearly 30 airlines operating from the international terminal at Chennai airport now. This includes many large carriers and low cost carriers to many places across the world. It must be taken into account that in January the international terminal handled a total of 3435 aircraft movements and 543281 passengers.
According to an official at the airport, 2 year back the new international terminal was inaugurated and has been operating with 72 check-in counters. He spoke about how initially these counters were sufficient. He concluded that due to traffic congestion there is a huge need for more such counters.
Information is that in March last week 48 new check-in counters would be available for the passengers at the airport. The decision to open more check-in counters was made last few months but was delayed due to the installation of in-line baggage scanning machines at the airport. Point is that only when the baggage scanners were ready check-in counters would become operational. The process of installation has been speeded up and would be ready before the summer season.
The construction of the second part of the international terminal has been going on now. Till now, 12percent of the works have been completed and the remaining works would be completed in March next year. Point is that after the inauguration in March AAI would need another 3 months for completing a few checks and some additional provisions etc. The passengers would be able to use the terminal afterwards.
