A surprising piece of information for the Chennaites!!
World Environment Day falls on 5th June is a well known to us. On this day, awareness would be created regarding environment based issues and steps would be taken to protect the environment.
On that important day, Chennai Mayor R. Priya would begin the tree plantation drive. It is noteworthy that GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has been preparing a sketch to plant trees in the unused space on the burial grounds and crematoriums in all the 15 zones.
The tree plantation drive would be initiated by Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran, GCC Commissioner and the trees would be planted every 15 to 20 feet with drip irrigation facility.
Recently, around 250 trees were planted in the Manali burial ground on an experimental basis. It is worthy to mention here that there are 212 burial facilities in Chennai including crematoriums and burial grounds having vacant space ranging from half an acre to 35 acres. This was according to the GCC commissioner.
He spoke about how the area engineers of the 15 GCC zones have been asked to prepare a sketch of each burial ground in the zones. Excess areas in these burial grounds would be taken into account for plantation of trees. More trees would be planted after the Chennai Mayor plants the first tree on 5th of June. He concluded that this initiative (of planting trees) would be extended to parks, apartment spaces etc too.
