With severe summer, the water level is dwindling fast at the Veeranam reservoir, located in Kattumannarkoil. This has led to the situation that water will be available for Chennai only for 20 more days.

Cuddalore gets irrigation water from the Veeranam reservoir for around 70000 acres of agricultural land. Drinking water is also supplied for Chennai city from the same reservoir. Last month, 135 mcft (million cubic feet) water was replenished at the reservoir to ensure water supply to Chennai city.

The capacity of the reservoir is 146.4 mcft. After the harvest of crops at Cuddalore, water requirement came down and this has facilitated more and regular water supply to Chennai city.

However, with summer being already severe, the water level at the reservoir has reduced drastically. Currently, only 63.8 mcft of water is available.. This indicated that there will be water supply to Chennai only for 20 more days!
