Members of Nature Trust are in opposition to the public works department (PWD) for leading soil test in Pallikaranai marshland near Sholinganallur, for the sake of construction of robust complexes to loft government offices.
In detail, PWD has started its job on performing soil testing
close to Perumbakkam Lake, which is just extreme to the special economic zone
(SEZ) on Perumbakkam Main Road, near Sholinganallur junction.
Since many years, NGOs are struggling with the State
government to safeguard the southern corner of the Pallikaranai marshland.
Also, Perumbakkam wetland acts as a transitory house for lot of migratory
birds, said K.V.R.K. Thirumaran of Nature Trust.
Government officials indulged with the argument that, they
are not razing out the wetland and in surplus, government complex constitute
only 11 acres of the unassessed dry land termed as ‘Tharisu land’, as part of
the total 70 hectares of land under the revenue department.
The 377 acres of land located in SEZ is not part of the
marshland and only rainwater festers there during the monsoon, says a PWD
official.
Government has allotted a fund of Rs.2 Crores for constructing the building for the purpose of housing office of the Sholinganallur tahsildar, a sub-treasury and several other government offices.
