According to union ministry of urban development Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirapalli or Trichy is ranked second in the Swachh Bharat ranking of 476 cities after Karnataka’s Mysore which scored the first rank.

The State capital Chennai, which is going to host its first Global Investors Meet (GIM), was ranked at 61st, while temple town of Madurai ranked 20th.

All the 476 Class-1 cities in 31 States and Union Territories, each with a population of above one lakh were surveyed for assessing  total sanitation practices covering a set of parameters including the extent of open defecation, solid waste management, septage management, waste water treatment, drinking water quality, surface water quality of water bodies and mortality due to water born diseases and others.

Chennai corporation officials are trying to figure out why the city fared so badly. If sources are to be believed, then the civic body will seek an explanation from Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) officials on the reasons behind why the city was ranked so low down the order.

Officials are also confused as to why the agency that the ministry had employed to conduct the study did not approach the Commissioner-ate of Municipal Administration (CMA) to source data. The director of CMA is the state mission director for SBM.
