The number of cars used in the city is overtaking the population in the world, all over. This has paved way for various diseases and health ailments in the people. In the recent days, Car-free Sundays is gaining popularity in foreign lands. Institute for Transportation and Development Policy has initiated such a move.

A similar event took place in Coimbatore recently. Following this, the Chennai Corporation is also set to organize a similar event here by joining hands with ITDP.

Speaking about this, officials of ITDP say Chennai largely lags in having enough vacant areas on roads. There is an unimaginable increase in the number of vehicles used in the city. This has in fact reduced walkers on road.

As a move to revive our traditional lifestyle practices, an event themed as a car-free Sunday is to be organized on Sunday. This will begin in the month of October. A road of one kilometer stretch will be selected. With the help of traffic police officials, all the vehicles in this route will be blocked.
