Not all are self-centred and there are many people present in Chennai city who are highly concerned about the society also and this was proved yesterday.

The information gathered is more than 4800 volunteers who are very much concerned about the society came together on Sunday morning for a superb reason. The purpose was to clean the beaches present in Thiruvanmiyur and Besant Nagar and they collected about 7.2 tonnes of waste. By this the garbage entering the sea would be prevented.

The point to be noted is the ‘World Environment Day’ falls on 5th June 2019 and to commemorate this day, the cleaning activity was organised by EFI or Environmental Foundation of India. It must be taken into account that cleaning activity took place on beaches along Broken Bridge, Astalakshmi temple, Thiruvanmiyur 4th Seaward Road, Kottivakkam, Palavakkam and in Neelangarai etc. It was mentioned by Mr. Vignesh Mahesh of EFI that 5th June falls on Wednesday and it would not be possible to mobilize so many volunteers and hence Sunday was chosen.

According to Mr. Vignesh Mahesh, it is important to create awareness on preserving natural systems from mistakes of urbanization. This is turning the water bodies to cesspools of sewage and garbage. By this, the habitats of other organisms are at huge danger. From 7am till 9 am on Sunday, the cleaning process took place and during the process non-biodegradable garbage like plastic bottles, rubber items, clothes, glass bottles, coconut shells etc were removed.

Along the beach stretch near the popular Astalakshmi temple, more than 3100 volunteers were involved in the removal of trash. It is revealed now that 4.6 tonnes of wastes were removed from this place. This programme aimed at creating awareness on conserving our water bodies grabbed the attention of many.

Normally it would have been difficult to cover the long stretch from Neelankarai up to Broken Bridge but the number of volunteers was so many and as a result the cleaning work in this long stretch was carried out easily. The important information is ahead of the cleaning programme the volunteers were sensitized on the importance of Chennai coastline.
