For the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market, greens (‘keerai’ in Tamil) transported from Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Hosur, Kudiyatham, Thiruvannamalai, and several other places including Andhra state.
However, due to the prevailing severe drought conditions, the yield or growth of the greens has been severely affected. So, the quantity of greens arriving at Koyambedu is substantially reduced. Subsequently, the price of greens has shot up gradually and has been at a peak since last few months.
At the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market, different varieties of greens – siru keerai, mulaikkeerai, pasalaikkeerai, araikkeerai, thandnkeerai, ponnaknannikkeerai, etc., - were sold at Rs. 10 to Rs. 15 a bunch. At the retails shops, they were sold at Rs. 25 to Rs. 30 each bunch. Sales of green are being done in a huge way at the Broadway Bus Terminus and Chintadripet market as well.
In a similar trend, the prices of other vegetables have also shot up! Most of the housewives are shocked when they hear the upward prices of the vegetables!
The adviser of the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market traders shared in this regard:
‘Greens were regularly transported in 25 truckloads daily. However, due to the prevailing drought conditions, most of the lands have gone dry! So, the yield/growth of greens has reduced substantially. Hence, the quantity of greens transported to Koyambedu has also reduced.
Instead of the 25 truckloads as mentioned above, only 10 truckloads are transported presently.
Only when there are sufficiently rains bringing reasonable quantity of water to the agricultural lands, the growth/yield of greens, coriander, green chillies, and other vegetables will pick up thereby leading to the prospects of the
