If you have been to Rajiv Gandhi Salai in Chennai then you would have been surprised by the superb lush green look there. Have you ever thought about what could be the reason?

Not many of us would be aware of the fact that every day 1.8 lakh litres of water brought by as many as 20 loads has helped this Rajiv Gandhi Salai to retain its greenish look.

It is superb to note that there are medians present here with hundreds of palm trees, umbrella trees and copper pod trees.  In addition to these, there are also 20 types of shrubs and plants and all of them combine together to give superb lush green look.

According to a source in the TN Development Company it is clear that treated sewage has been procured from the metro water department to water the medians and an amount of Rs 1.5 lakhs was spent for this purpose every month. It is worthy to note that when IT corridor was planned greenery in the 2 m wide median was factored in. Point to be noted is superb care and maintenance has been carried out for the last 11 years and the road now has 44,000 sq m of greenery.

The road has been maintained by over 38 laborers and 5 supervisory staffs by applying organic manure once in 6 months and by applying pesticides every Saturday. It was explained by an official that the road has got many types of plants that do not attract the cattle and as a result the cattle do not eat these plants here. It must be noted that the road also has got one metre wide spaces so that the pedestrians could cross easily without causing any issue like trampling etc on the plants.

The official then shed light on how the people throw food and waste on the medians and how because of this the plants get attacked by pests etc. By spraying the pesticides, the plants get protected. In the stretch between SRP tools and Siruseri, more trees should be planted on the medians and this was as per a resident of Mettupakkam. He added that the presence of trees on the Madhya Kailash stretch prevent the glare from the vehicles moving in the opposite direction. Finally he hinted about the need to have more trees on the sides too and then explained about how when OMR was laid many trees were chopped off.
