By the month of October, 2 mobile intensive care units or ICU’s would be installed at Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in Chennai. These 2 mobile units would have the capacity to support 5 beds each.

For running basic diagnostic tests and radiology procedures and to support the additional beds, an additional nursing station would also be added to the facility at KMCH.

As per the dean of KMCH Dr. P. Vasanthamani, the mobile units are equipped with oxygen facilities and by that it would be possible to run tests such as ECG, X-Ray, scan and blood tests etc. She hinted that the authorities have got plans to set up mobile ICUs in 3 government hospitals to study their stability and efficiency.

Point is the mobile units reduce their need for separate infrastructure to provide intensive care to critical patients. It was mentioned that the Buddusamy block in KMCH would have mobile units. Important information is that these units are modular and they could be easily replaced later.

It is superb to note that these units have been built in such a way that they could be made fully functional in just 5 days. The mobile ICUs could also be used in rural places as well as in non-district headquarters hospitals if the efficiency of the mobile ICUs gets proved.
