Chennai residents would have been familiar with the Adyar River that originates near Chembarambakkam Lake and flows through Chennai. Point is that this 42.5km Adyar River contributes to the estuarine ecosystem of the city of Chennai.

The news is GCC would be developing a playground and dense urban forest near the banks of this river. Under the Adyar River Restoration project, this would be implemented. It is known that Adyar restoration Project is under CRRT or Chennai River Restoration Trust.

The GCC has identified a land parcel of 20215 sq km near the Canal Bank Road and it is said that the new playground and an urban forest would come there. According to an official belonging to GCC, an estimate around Rs 2 crores has been prepared for this project. Like it was done in the past, the new urban forest here would be created using the Miyawaki plantation method. Just a few days back, the estimate of Rs 2 crores was approved by the special council.

Information is that the tender process plus civil works would start within a few weeks of time. Mass saplings plantations have been carried out by GCC and several departments under the CRRT are known. In addition to this, there is also removal of encroachments that are being done by GCC. Construction of compound walls is done by the Chennai Corporation to avoid encroachments in the future. Some time back, GCC made news when it created the first Miyawaki forest in Kotturpuram. Many such forests have been created at various places in Chennai.
