It was brought to light by a few north Chennai residents that 2 months back a major fire broke out at Kodungaiyur dump yard and it took an entire day to control the fire and smoke. Residents have requested about shifting Kodungaiyur dump yard to another area but no action has been taken till now.
According to a resident of Kodungaiyur, release of toxic gas due to garbage burning was a perennial problem. He spoke about how the sanitary workers dump the waste in Kodungaiyur and burn them also. This has affected the ground water table in the locality. The residents are now depending on the private water tankers.
Shocking fact is that water contamination here began 15 years back and till now there has been no solution. In the rainy season, the situation becomes very bad. It is noteworthy that residents have poor ventilation here because they have been forced to shut down all doors and windows to avoid odour.
