Through sale of water alone, CMWSSB or Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, is now expecting to get a huge income of more than Rs 700 crores in the 2022-23 fiscal.
According to the statement of income and expenditure that was released by CMWSSB, from the sale of water alone, the metro water has estimated an amount of Rs 708 crores and Rs 518 crores from water and sewerage taxes. Not only that, the metro water department has estimated Rs 212 crores and Rs 67 crores as grants from the government and other sources respectively. For the year, a total amount of Rs 1502 crores has been estimated.
The water agency has generated an amount of Rs 567 crores through the sale of water in the year 2021-22. This corresponds to 50% of the total income recorded in the year. It is known that metro water sells water and treated water to various industries in Chennai plus tanker water to various residences and commercial apartments etc. Various commercial establishments are hotels, restaurants, hospitals, multiplexes etc.
Metro water sells 10 kilolitres of water at Rs 4 to the domestic residential buildings and above 25 kilolitres Rs 40. This is for the metered consumers. It is noteworthy that for the hospitals water charges has been fixed at Rs 1694 fir usage up to 500 kilolitres. For the water supply of more than 500 kilolitres, the metro water department has collected Rs 1452 crores from various industries.
An amount of Rs 80 per month is being collected by the water agency for unmetered residential buildings and for commercial establishments it collects Rs 1452 every month. In 2020-21 and in 2021-22 the water as well as sewer tax collections were Rs 226 crores and Rs 239 crores respectively. The revision in the property tax has led to the increase in the water and sewer tax estimations now.
Point is that the metro water tax is calculated based on the property tax. The Metro water has prepared a surplus budget statement due to the increase in the tax estimation and water sales etc. In the last 2 years, metro water had a deficit budget.
