As per the media reports, a passenger ferry service would be started from january 2023 onwards between Kankesanthurai port in Jaffna district in Sri Lanka and Puducherry in india.
By middle of January next year, the ferry service would begin and this was mentioned by Ports, Shipping and Aviation minister Nirmal Sripala DeSilva. It must be noted that the Indian government has extended consent for the service.
There are many Indians who have been engaged in the business activities in the Jaffna Peninsula. Truth is that the upcoming ferry service would generate a large amount of foreign income. Buddhist pilgrims in India would also benefit from this ferry service.
From south India to Trincomalee and Colombo in Sri Lanka, passenger transport services would be started. There is still no clarity regarding starting ferry service between Talaimannar and India.
The demands of the people from both India as well as Sri Lanka have been taken into consideration and that was the reason for starting the ferry service between the 2 countries from next month. It was brought out by some ferry owners that the existing facility at the ports must be upgraded further for providing passenger service.
For taking immediate steps to develop the infrastructure related to customs, immigration and emigration etc at the Sri Lankan ports, the minister Mr.Nirmal Sripala deSilva has instructed Ports, Shipping and Civil Aviation ministry secretary.
