Now, suddenly, thousands of migratory birds have come to the salt pan in Nemilichery and Thaiyur lake near Mahabalipuram. This has surprised many bird watchers now. It is true that the ducks were not sighted in huge numbers in the usual sites in Chennai plus in other parts of TN.
In the recent survey, Eurasian wigeon, northern shoveler, northern pintail were the 3 duck species that were sighted in huge numbers in the 2 locations. The availability of feed would have been making the ducts to choose a particular location and this was as per some experts.
It was revealed by Mr.M. Balachandran, DD of BNHS or Deputy Director of Bombay Natural History Society that his team has visited many bird spots from Kanniyakumari to Pulicat lake in Thiruvallur district near Chennai. Northern shovelers were not sighted by the team members in none of the places. It was really surprising that even the Perumbakkam marshland (that is an extension of Pallikaranai marshland where the migratory ducks used to come in huge numbers) had a small number of shovellers.
According to Mr. KVRK. Thirunarayanan, founder of The Nature Trust, it was true that his team witnessed 2000 northern pintails, 2500 northern shovellers and 2500 Eurasian wigeons in salt pan in Nemellichary and in Thaiyur lake.
