Currently, the services of MRTS or Mass Rapid Transit System or Parakkum Rail are with the TN government. The Southern Railways or SR has decided to provide free coaches for the first and second year and an agreement would be signed soon.

It is well known to us that Chennai is one of the cities with major public transport and all types of transport modes like MTC buses, electric trains, MRTS, metro trains etc are available for the public. The major transport demand of the public in Chennai is being solved by the suburban electric trains here. Major parts in Chennai are connected by Chennai-Tambaram-Chengalpet, Chennai-Arakkonam Central- Gummidipoondi, Beach-Thiruvottriyur suburban train services.

As the suburban trains are being used by many passengers in Chennai, delay in the running of the trains would lead to overcrowding at the railway stations. From Chennai Central to Velachery, MRTS is being operated in Chennai. The MRTS passes through the localities with many IT companies like Velachery, Perungudi, Thiruvanmiyur, Kastrubha Nagar etc and Triplicane railway station, Chepauk etc that is being used by many commuters to reach the Marina Beach.

There have been many complaints from the passengers regarding the services of MRTS in the past few days. In this scenario, TN govt is planning to take over MRTS services from Beach to Velachery in Chennai. The TN govt has decided to make a detailed business plan regarding taking over of services etc. The CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority has planned to renovate the MRTS railway stations and convert them into metro stations. Various railway stations in Chennai included would be Mandaveli, Greenways Road, Kotturpuram, Kasthurba Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Taramani, Perungudi AND Velachery etc.

A tender has been called for selecting a company to prepare the detailed business report and a decision regarding this has been taken. It must be noted that an MOU or memorandum of understanding would be signed between SR and CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan transport authority. It is now said that SR was willing to provide the MRTS to the TN govt and the agreement has been sent for the approval from the TN govt.

It has been informed that the SR would continue to monitor the operations of MRTS for one year even after signing an MOU with CUMTA for taking over the operations. There are also plans from SR to attract more commuters and plans to set up more shops etc. The SR has mentioned that for the first two years it would supply railway coaches for free to CUMTA and then it would supply the coaches for a certain amount. A detailed explanation was given regarding operating MRTS and suburban trains up to Chennai beach without any hassle.
