Chennai and suburbs to get rains over the next few days

There is a cheerful news to Chennaites because there will be some rainfall for the next few days. On Monday, some parts of the city recorded light rainfall due to convective activity, which usually follows after a period of high temperature. Weather observatories in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 34.8 degree Celsius and 34.3 degree Celsius respectively, two degrees above normal.
According to the meteorological department, monsoon activity will remain subdued over the State for the next three or four days.
Weather models are indicating the formation of a system over the Bay of Bengal and it will be a few more days before the southwest monsoon withdraws from north India.
Rainfall may occur in Chennai and its neighbouring districts as it is located close to the Bay of Bengal. Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, said that usually the southwest monsoon starts withdrawing around this time of the year. In Tamil Nadu, the monsoon activity is expected to revive next week before the end of the season. This week, the State is expected to get rainfall of 1 mm daily as against its daily quota of 4-5 mm, he said.
Chennai has so far received 598 mm of rainfall this season since June 1, which is 45 per cent more than its usual share of 413 mm.
