The newly launched bachelor of vocational courses or B. Voc by the famous Anna University or AU in Chennai has failed to attract the students.  It is known that Anna University was established in the year 1978 and is a public state university and its main campus is located in Guindy, Chennai.

Now, the higher education dept has advised AU to devise a broad plan by taking into account industrial requirements before offering new courses for the students in the coming years.

It must be recalled that AU introduced logistics management and footwear manufacturing courses among over 15 B.Voc courses at its constituent colleges such as University College of Engineering, Kancheepuram and University College of engineering, Arni. It was brought to light that out of a total of 30 intakes in each college just few seats have been filled in these colleges.

Anna University based senior professor explained that these new courses focus on empowering youths with skill development. He added that the curriculum was designed based on the industrial requirements and region specific requirements.

Point is that the students were not interested to join BVoc courses but they sought admission in the   computer sciences and IT courses. There was also anticipation regarding students leaving engineering courses and joining BVoc courses.

The senior professor from AU spoke about how 976 students were on the provisional seat allotment list during the engineering admissions in 2024 organised by the Directorate of Technical Education or DOTE.

During the recent syndicate meeting of AU, the authorities belonging to the Higher Education Department indicated the poor patronage to the newly started B.Voc courses.

The authorities wanted the universities to introduce new courses not only to attract the students but also to provide job opportunities across the country.  This was mentioned by the senior professor.

Latest sector based requirements must be taken into account for the introduction of new courses in any stream and the university would take measures regarding this. He concluded that wide publicity would also be given so that there would be an increase in admissions to these courses.
