Important announcement regarding a new flyover at Velachery in Chennai!!

At present, there is heavy traffic congestion at Guru Nanak College Junction and at Five Furlong Road Junction at Velachery in Chennai. It is noteworthy that the traffic survey conducted here recorded a peak hour volume of 7459 passenger car units at Five Furlong Road Junction and 7742 passenger car units at Guru Nanak College Junction. To decongest the traffic here, a flyover has been proposed. This was mentioned by a civic official.

On Friday, 14th March 2025, TN Finance Minister Thangam Thennnarasu announced that a 3km flyover connecting Guindy to Velachery would be constructed at a cost of Rs 310 cr. By this, about 7lakhs people would benefit.

It was revealed by an officer belonging to the Bridges Dept of GCC that a 2lane 12m wide bridge would begin at Sardar Patel Road Junction on the Velachery Main Road and extend past Phoenix Mall at Velachery. Information is that the flyover or bridge would pass through Race Course Road Junction, Five Furlong Road Junction and Velachery Bypass Road Junction etc. He hinted that 5.5m wide unidirectional ramps were proposed on Five Furlong Road and near Guru Nanak College. On both sides, a 5.5m wide service road and 1.5m wide footpath has been proposed.

It is now said that public consultation would be held soon and about 1100 square metres of land would have to be acquired. In another 3 months, a tender would be floated.

According to the Budget Estimate a ROB or rail over bridge would be constructed between Korrukupet and Vyasarpadi would be constructed by the GCC along with the Ministry of Railways. An amount of Rs 70 cr has been allotted. Information collected is that this ROB would be a 600m 2lane railway overbridge made of steel. The Bridges dept of GCC would be executing the approach portion.
