About 7 lakh consumers are not yet been registered under the government’s direct subsidy scheme. This will result in the need to buy cylinder for the full price without subsidy.

Gas cylinder consumers are provided with cylinders at the subsidized rate of Rs 404.50. Enrollment of consumers under this scheme is likely to get closed by this month end. Following this, the direct subsidy scheme introduced by the government will come into practice. There are numerous consumers who have not yet registered their name for this scheme. In Tamil Nadu, there are over 7 lakh consumers who have not yet got their connections enrolled under this scheme. All of them will have go purchase cylinders at the market rate without subsidy from next month.

Speaking to one of the customers at Nungambakkam, he says he submitted all the necessary documents to the gas agency including Aadhar number last month. However he has not yet received any confirmation or approval from the gas agency and hence, he will have to pay the full amount from next month, he stated.

When asked to one other resident, she says though the subsidy scheme doesn’t need Aadhar number mandatorily, banks are troubling us asking for the same.
